Neither Here Nor There, Vol. 1

During June and July I worked on a small book made of recycled paper and bound by myself. I have been interested in bookmaking for some time now. I drew in this book with the intention that information from the recycled pages from the various humdrum's of my life (bank statements, discarded prints, practice sheets from my Spanish class) would direct its form. The book contains a series of map like elements. I am mapping out spaces and experiences, real and imagined.

I have made copies of  the original and am giving away the zines. It's a limited edition of 30. If you live in Trinidad and Tobago please email me to get your free copy, alicia@aliciamilne.com

If you live outside of Trinidad and Tobago you can order a copy through my storenvy account. The zine is free but a small fee for shipping is required.

Neither Here Nor There, Vol. 1 - printed on 20 lb stock, 20 pages and hand bound by the artist, 2011.

Formations - August Update

Ceramic and Basil experiment, August 2011

I haven't updated in a while. Just wanted to share these photos, albeit low quality phone pics. I am working on several things, these ceramic heads being one of them. I am very interested in childhood and formative years. I am interested in what children do with the information that is handed to them and that which is observed. What stays inside the box and concretizes, what triggers questions, what is absorbed and manifests as something else.

Trinidad and Tobago Love for Hyperallergic

For the past three months Hyperallergic has been inviting it's readers to post to them any form of mail art. Those submissions received so far have been included in an exhibition entitled Presents: Three Months of Mail Art for Hyperallergic HQ at Northside open studios, from the 17th -29th June 2011 in Brooklyn, New York.

According to Hyperallergic's website, the show "will include mail art in the form of sculpture, installation, video and works on paper. The show’s catalogue will be in the form of a ‘zine."

"Co-curated by Kate Wadkins and Hrag Vartanian, Presents will draw on the 100+ mail art works that have been sent to Hyperallergic since our initial request for submissions to our Mail Art Bulletin in March 2011. The show will include everything from practical jokes to prayer/envelope flags. They represent a range of materials and subject matter all emphasizing the tangible communication from one individual to another."

My submission was a quick love note, playfully expressing some 'Tobago Love' .... along with a matching minicard holder and T&T flag envelope.

Clockwise: Minicard holder, 'love' note and envelope.

Official Website Launched!

I have finished putting together a portfolio website for myself. I launched it through twitter and facebook on Tuesday, you can have a look at it here. The response seems to be favorable so far, but more feedback is always welcome! It's nice to be able to group full bodies of work together in one space. However, this blog will be the place where documentation and works in progress continue to live.

I built the aliciamilne.com using 4ormat. The service is made for creatives to put their portfolios online. They cover hosting and you utilize their editable templates. I had a very good experience and their support is great. Have a look here.

Mingi Wants

Some of my work is now available for purchase online at Mingi Wants. I sent over some hand made greeting cards (see the last few entries on this blog) and raku plant pots for Mingi. Have a look at the site - she's got some really unique stuff, plus is an avenue for supporting local artisans.

New Years Flowers

Happy new year to everyone, I suppose it's a little late. The graphite and collage images below feature on some cards I made to send to friends and contacts afar bearing new year greetings.

My mind is full of projects and plans for the year. I have begun story boarding a motion piece I will be working on, looking into some options for a print project and even started dabbling with paint again. As usual, work in clay continues and I look forward to sharing some pictures soon (if I can get my camera to work).

I do intend to post more frequently on the blog this year instead of sporadic 6 month updates...especially as I now have a domain name thanks to Luis, so I have a website to build!
